The Tallow Soap Bar (Lavender & Lemon Myrtle) is a traditionally crafted bar soap made from a small list of clean, recognisable ingredients: 100% grass-fed Australian beef tallow as the base, with Australian lavender and lemon myrtle essential oils for fragrance. That is the substance of it. No synthetic fragrances, no sulphates, no parabens, no phthalates, no detergents, no palm oil.

Tallow — rendered beef fat — has been used in soap-making for centuries, long before petrochemical surfactants took over the industry. We've brought it back because it makes genuinely excellent soap, and because it aligns with the same sourcing values we apply to our edible products. The result is a dense, creamy bar that works for face, body, and hands — one bar, every use.

Because tallow's fatty acid profile closely resembles the oils your skin produces naturally.

The predominant fats in tallow — oleic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid — are the same fats found in the skin's own lipid barrier. That structural similarity means tallow-based soap tends to cleanse without stripping. A lot of conventional soaps and body washes use synthetic surfactants (SLS, SLES, and similar compounds) that are highly effective at removing oils — including the ones your skin actually needs.

Tallow also provides fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K naturally. In a soap, these aren't delivered at therapeutic doses — but the presence of nutrient-dense fat in the wash base is a very different thing from a petrochemical detergent bar.

From an ancestral nutrition standpoint, tallow is the most natural soap base available. It is what humans made soap from for most of recorded history. The shift to palm oil and synthetic surfactants is recent. We think the original approach held up better.

The Lavender & Lemon Myrtle variant uses two essential oils:

Australian lavender — a clean, floral-herbal scent, familiar and calming. The lavender we use is sourced from Australian-grown stock.

Lemon myrtle — a uniquely Australian native, with a bright, citrus-forward aroma that is sharper and more complex than standard lemon. If you haven't encountered it before, it's a genuine discovery — distinctively Australian and nothing like a synthetic lemon fragrance.

Together, the two oils create a scent that's light and fresh at lathering, and settles to a subtle warmth on the skin. It's not perfume-heavy. The essential oil ratio is kept intentional — enough to make the wash experience pleasant, not so much that it dominates.

Both oils are used for their scent contribution as cosmetic fragrance ingredients. We do not make therapeutic claims about either oil.

All three. The bar is intended for full use: face wash, body bar, hand soap at the sink. Many of our customers keep one at the bathroom sink and one in the shower and use it for everything.

We don't make claims about this soap treating or improving any skin condition. What we can say is the ingredient profile is as clean and minimal as bar soap gets.

Provenir processes at the farm rather than at a remote industrial facility. That means less animal transport stress, greater traceability, and a shorter chain of handling. For us, sourcing isn't a marketing conversation — it's the operational foundation of the business. The tallow in your soap comes from the same cattle as the fat in our cooking tallow range.

Regenerative farming matters here too. Grass-fed and grass-finished cattle are raised on pasture, without the feedlot stress or grain-finishing contamination risk that comes with conventional beef production. The Vital Origin Tallow Soap Bar is traditionally crafted using a cold-process method — the classic soap-making approach that preserves the natural glycerin produced during saponification, rather than stripping it out (as commercial manufacturers often do, redirecting glycerin to sell separately).

Cold-process soap takes longer to produce than industrially made bars — it requires a proper cure time before it's ready to use. The result is a denser, longer-lasting bar with a richer lather than most mass-market alternatives.

Each bar typically lasts 8–12 weeks with regular face and body use. The actual lifespan depends on how often you use it and — critically — how you store it between uses.

The most important storage tip: keep it dry between uses. A draining soap dish or wooden soap tray that lets air circulate underneath the bar will significantly extend its life. Sitting in pooled water accelerates soap breakdown in any bar, but particularly with natural cold-process bars that don't contain synthetic hardeners.

Because our bars are dense and cold-processed, they hold their form well. They won't melt away the way softer, synthetically-inflated bars sometimes do.

Yes. The Tallow Soap Bar comes in paper/cardboard wrap — no plastic packaging. A bar soap by nature already eliminates one of the main plastic waste sources in a typical bathroom routine: the pump bottle. No plastic bottle, no plastic pump, no lid.

If the waste footprint of your household products matters to you, a bar soap in paper wrap is close to optimal. One bar replaces an entire bottle of body wash. The packaging goes in the recycling or compost.

Yes — many of our customers do. The bar is gentle enough for daily face use. The tallow base and the absence of sulphate surfactants mean it cleans without the stripping sensation that some face washes leave behind.

No. This is the question almost everyone asks, and the answer is a clear no.

The tallow base is rendered and processed to be odour-neutral before it goes into the soap. There is no residual beef smell in the finished bar. What you smell — when you open the wrapping, when you lather, and when you rinse — is the lavender and lemon myrtle.

If you've used the Vital Origin cooking tallow and noticed it has a mild natural scent, the soap is a different situation. The processing and saponification process produces a bar that is clean-smelling. The essential oils do the rest. This is not a soap that smells like the kitchen.

No — tallow is an animal-derived ingredient (rendered beef fat), and this soap is not suitable for those following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. We're straightforward about that.

The reason we use tallow — rather than a plant-based alternative like coconut or palm oil — is that we believe animal fat from regenerative, grass-fed, humanely-raised Australian cattle is the most ancestral, sustainable, and skin-compatible base available for soap-making. For us, the regenerative agriculture story is inseparable from the product. Supporting Australian regenerative farmers, reducing reliance on palm oil (with its deforestation footprint), and using every part of the animal responsibly — that's the position.

We're not the right soap for everyone's values, and that's okay. For customers whose values align with ancestral, regenerative, and animal-based living, this is the version of soap that fits that philosophy.

The Tallow Soap Bar is an external-use cosmetic product — it's rinsed off, not ingested. For most people, pregnancy does not change their ability to use standard bar soap.

That said, some people find their skin or scent sensitivities change during pregnancy. Both lavender and lemon myrtle essential oils are commonly used in cosmetic products, and the concentrations in our soap are consistent with standard cosmetic formulation.

If you have known essential oil sensitivities or are unsure whether a new skincare product is appropriate during pregnancy, the safest approach is to consult your healthcare practitioner or midwife. The Unscented variant (currently out of stock — check back for restock) would be the obvious option for those who want to avoid essential oils entirely.

Standard good practice: avoid contact with eyes, and keep out of reach of children. If skin irritation occurs, discontinue use.
